First Time at VoiceCon

Next week, if you'll be attending VoiceCon for the first time, then you should attend the afternoon tutorial on Monday, "VoIP and IPT: Basics to Best Practices" in room 131 from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The tutorial will also help you navigate the keynote and breakout sessions as well as the exhibit floor.Legacy PBX systems are being retired, and new functionality is essentially only available with IP-based systems. Migrating to Voice over IP (VoIP) and IP Telephony (IPT) has moved from "if" to "when." But despite the growth of these new technologies, many enterprises have limited experience with IP Telephony and VoIP. Once the decision to migrate is made, there is a host of tough challenges to face - from inventorying the readiness of LANs and wiring closets, to WAN performance, IT organizational and staffing issues, security, utility costs and software support, patching and version control.

This tutorial analyzes these issues with recommended actions and best practices that will lead to successful VoIP/IPT deployments. It cuts through the hype to the real advantages and presents how VoIP/IPT works and operates. This session will also guide the attendee through the rest of the VoiceCon conference with suggested sessions, exhibits and other resources that will make the conference attendance experience as valuable as possible.

Some of the topics covered in the tutorial are:

* What are VoIP and IP Telephony (IPT)? * How does a converged voice and data network operate? * Justifications for VoIP and IPT * Understanding the many standards - H.323, SIP, MGCP, RTP, RTCP, G.711, G.729, G.722 * The IPT hardware and software configurations for the IP PBX and Converged PBX * Evaluating hard and softphones * Measuring voice quality - Mean Opinion Score (MOS) * Assessing the closet LAN and WAN for VoIP/IPT * Changes required in managing a converged network and bandwidth allocation * Designing for reliability and resiliency * Troubleshooting performance and fault problems * Managing software and security issues * Organizing the IT department for VoIP/IPT and UC * How does Unified Communications fit into the picture? * Best practices recommendations

This tutorial has been among the most popular at every VoiceCon conference. Attend this tutorial and you will be well prepared to get the most value from the VoiceCon conference.
