Rurik Bradbury on Cisco-Jabber

Rurik Bradbury, who's chief marketing officer at Unison, which makes a UC system, sent me these thoughts about the Cisco-Jabber deal:

I agree that XMPP is very important (Unison uses XMPP not just for IM but for pushing other types of info -- it is very flexible) and that Cisco is trying to out-maneuver Microsoft on the standards front. I think there are a couple of important additional points:

1 Jabber's main product is not open source - it is closed

2 Buying Jabber does not give Cisco significant ownership of the XMPP standard -- it is already too widely 'out there'

3 It looks like Cisco is going the route of SaaS-only for SMBs with on-premise options for larger enterprises. This is unlikely to succeed. Unison is will offer both on-premise and SaaS UC for SMBs but we expect uptake to be be split roughly 85/15 in favor of on-premise. It's an interesting story to explore I think: Cisco has placed a lot of chips on SaaS by saying it will integrate PostPath and Jabber into its online office suite.
