Reuters: Giancarlo Only Wants Avaya CEO Job for Interim

Via Forbes.com, Charlie Giancarlo told Reuters today that he won't consider the Avaya president/CEO job on anything but an interim basis.

Via Forbes.com, Charlie Giancarlo told Reuters today that he won't consider the Avaya president/CEO job on anything but an interim basis. Here's the key quote:

"I won't speak for the board, but my guess is, if I wanted the job full time I could have it. And if our intention, Silver Lake's intention, or my intention, was to take it full time, we would have announced that," Giancarlo told Reuters.

That affirms something Marty Parker wrote on this blog yesterday: "It does not appear that Charlie Giancarlo joined Silver Lake to be CEO of Avaya. And, if he did want that job, he would not be the interim CEO now."

The other thing I found fascinating in the Reuters story is that Giancarlo did talk to Cisco CEO John Chambers about the interim Avaya CEO assignment. According to Reuters:

"We've had several phone conversations, actually. I wanted to explain to him [Chambers] that this was an interim position for me," he [Giancarlo] said.

"I told him when I left... it wasn't my intention to compete with Cisco as an individual. This was a special circumstance that required an immediate response."

The entire Giancarlo interview has some further details on Silver Lake's strategy with regard to Avaya. Definitely worth a read.
