Recent Happenings Around the Industry

Here are some of the most notable:

Jive Communications
Jive Communications is based in Utah and provides hosted voice, UC and fax. I've written about the company previously, specifically about its dial plan and integration capabilities using the Panasonic PBX product line that allows elimination of on-site voice mail/automated attendant. I've also written about them in regard to call queuing in the cloud vs. using physical lines/channels, the company's willingness to develop new features and its great customer support. At the conference, I spoke with Michael Costello (Strategic Partnerships, Jive) and he told me about Jive's success in winning over 180 school district awards.

Under the federal Education Rate (E-Rate) program, one part of the Universal Service Fund (USF) provides $2.25 billion annually to eligible schools and libraries to obtain technology. The program provides discounts of 20 to 90% for technology investments and is calculated based on the number of students eligible for the National School Lunch Program.

School districts use Priority-1 E-Rate money to acquire the services. Interconnected VoIP is defined as a service that:

(1) Enables real-time, two-way voice communications
(2) Requires a broadband connection from the user's location
(3) Requires Internet protocol-compatible customer premises equipment (CPE)
(4) Permits users generally to receive calls that originate on the public switched telephone network and to terminate calls to the public switched telephone network

Global Call Forwarding
GlobalCallForwarding offers local numbers and toll free numbers for 80+ countries. Their call forwarding system is designed mainly for businesses to establish virtual presence anywhere, available by activating local or toll free numbers. These numbers are redirected to customer-defined telephone numbers. Other features and services include advanced call forwarding, time of day forwarding, voice mail and voice mail to email, forward-fax/fax to email, select country forwarding, and Black/White lists. This is pretty cool since existing TDM users/customers without SIP can still take advantage of creating a presence in another location cost effectively.
