110 Billion Text Messages Last December

Text messages are simple, quick, and offer some privacy over talking in a crowd. Any Unified Communications strategy should include handling text messages.

The Census Bureau released some statistics on Tuesday. A few interesting communication statistics:1. There are 270 million cell phone subscribers in the U.S. and the average call duration is 2.3 minutes in December of 2008, which is down from 3.05 minutes in 2004

2. The number of text messages grew from 48 Billion in December of 2007 to 110 Billion in December of 2008, for an average of 407 text messages per user.

3. The number of newspapers sold in 2000 vs. 2008 went from 55.8 Million to 48.6 Million

With Twitter and other social networking, the dramatic growth in text messaging I am sure continued in 2009. The sheer number of text messages, surely most of them by teens, is staggering.
