Verizon Buys Terremark
This happened way back in January, so many people may not remember it as a big 2011 event, but it signaled that traditional carriers would have a play for cloud services. Terremark owned and operated the NAP of the Americas, a huge datacenter in Miami (shown above); equally important, Verizon committed to keeping Terremark as a separate business unit, indicating that while the carrier sees cloud as crucial, they're smart enough not to try and force the cloud into a Bell shape.
