Pizza Boxes and Power
Yesterday, we had a couple of posts, one by Gary Audin and one by me, that relate to power consumption and form factor. Today, at his blog, Om Malik addresses the issue of power consumption by "pizza box" servers.
Om concludes his post by asking if power issues will drive a return to "big iron." But Gary's got a longer article in Business Communications Review that spells out the power demands of the datacenter as well.
It's kind of made me re-think my post yesterday about Shoretel going to the half-U form factor in their new switch, a box that can still serve double the stations of the previous 1U box, while saving power. If you're serious about being green--and I, for one, am not convinced that companies really are, yet--but if you are, maybe you take Shoretel at their word.
